Dark Side of K-Pop Documentary Review

Netflix’s dark side of K-pop documentary is a fascinating and insightful look at the lives of some of the most well-known female K-pop artists. The production company behind the music is YG Entertainment, which has been the subject of many controversial scandals, including the sex videos and prostitution controversies that broke last year. Although it focuses on the female members of the group, the film also shows the inner workings of the YG system, including the ruthless management and demands on its artists.

This dark side of K-pop documentary focuses on the workings of a girl group called the Nine Muses. Their name is inspired by the Greek muses, and the group’s management team has been working with them for years. It takes an insider look at the hectic schedules, long rehearsals, and recording sessions that go into making a K-pop hit. The documentary highlights the jealousy, competition, and blood, sweat, and tears that go into making a K-pop star.

This documentary is largely focused on the lives of four talented young women, excluding the dozens of others who did not make it. Many teenagers flock to the academies in the hope of becoming a star, leaving their families and friends behind to pursue their dreams. Sadly, dozens of these hopefuls fall by the wayside each year. They are deemed not talented enough or disciplined enough to make the cut. Failure often comes with a stigma.
